Preventing Gum Disease

Adults over the age of 35 lose more teeth to periodontal (gum) diseases than from cavities. Three out of four adults are affected at some time in their life. The best way to prevent cavities and periodontal disease is by daily thorough tooth brushing and flossing techniques and regular professional examinations and cleanings. Unfortunately, even with the most diligent home dental care, people still can develop some form of periodontal disease. Once this disease starts, professional intervention is necessary to prevent its progress.  For those at high risk for developing or worsening periodontal disease, Dr. Gordon, in addition to surgical therapy, may recommend professional cleanings on a more frequent basis. Rather than 2 cleanings a year, they may recommend 3-4 cleanings a year in order to arrest any active disease and to monitor any problematic areas.

In addition to plaque and calculus accumulation on the teeth, there are several other important factors that may affect the health of your gums.  These factors may include any of the following:

A diagnostic consultation with Dr. Gordon will help to determine if any of these risk factors apply to you. For more information on the prevention of periodontal disease please refer to our FAQs page and external links of interest.
